Informing you on Melksham environment and climate issues [about]
For Melksham Town Football Club - (here) • For Melksham Town Council (here) | Forecast | |
From Mike Saunders:
OBJECTIVE: To create a central "go to" online directory containing pretty well every aspect and activity of our town and surrounding villages, with a prominent Environmental aspect to encourage participation and enthusiasm to revise lifestyles and become Climate aware.
REASON: To simplify the location and search for local information. There are many entries uploaded to assorted but unconnected online vehicles like Facebook or Twitter from groups, clubs, local authorities, restaurants, retailers, businesses etc, and a HUB will give the opportunity to put everything in one place for users to instinctively head to.
OPEN PAGE: A short and clear description of HUB, what it offers and how to navigate it. This can best be done with the use of a page of ICONS, eg a picture of a football with the simple title "Football" written beside it. Note; not titled Melksham Football as individual football clubs can be sub-headed after clicking on the Prime Icon picture of the football.
ENTRIES: Any organisation or whatever can upload information but we must have some form of policing to protect uploaders, users and ourselves from any legal or ethnic issues etc. This may be done by physical checks although this could be rather impractical by the volume of entries uploaded. There are other ways like the recognising of Trigger Words or Phrases built into the software. Another option may be to identify specific areas of misuse via the type of Icon clicked and monitor that.
TITLE: Used to create a generic style of identity. The most simple and descriptive title is “HUB” as in one word titles like Facebook or Twitter, people will soon get to remember, recognise and use it. We must not fall into the trap of of giving it a title by association eg Melksham Hub as this immediately categorises it. The title is not a point scoring exercise but a purely neutral and easily remembered description.
TERMS AND CONDITIONS: To outline to users in clear and simple terms the potential penalties for misuse etc.
INDEMNITY: Any person who is associated with building, moderating or has influence connected to HUB requires to be indemnified against any errors or charges which may occur. ASSOCIATION: Although HUB may have been originally initiated by the council it must not give the impression that it appears to belong to, or is controlled by the council although reference to the council could possibly be noted and buried in the small print somewhere. For the HUB to generate credibility and be successful it needs to STAND ALONE in the eyes of the user.
INITIAL LIFESPAN: It is proposed that HUB runs for 6 months initially to be able to gauge acceptance, usage and iron out any obvious wrinkles and, assuming it can be managed okay we can then move forward permanently.
INITIAL PROMOTION: HUB will require initial promotion and this may best be served using a traditional means like The Melksham News. An option to generate "intrigue" may be to repetitively mention in the paper for several issues a prominent one liner like "who is the new kid on the block ?" and not say anything like Melksham Town Council are about to launch a website / social media platform or whatever as this will then become by association and for HUB to succeed it must be "identified as completely neutral". Rather than a advert style of promotion which would be lost amongst all the other adverts, earmarking the right hand top corner border of the newspapers right hand pages stands out prominently, and can be negotiated cost wise not on its repetitiveness but by its cumulative real estate compared to the size of an individual advert.
Comment - an excellent starter point putting ideas together. This sees the page / group as being associated with the Melksham Virtual Hub project - however which (if either) takes the lead is an open question. We need to ensure that content and users / URL can be passed across if they merge later, and also that one project is not he'd back by the timescales of the other or its methods and regulation. |
