FUEL EFFICIENT DRIVING
(Tips to save fuel and reduce emissions)

Tyres
Driving with the incorrect tyre pressure adversely affects fuel consumption. It can also reduce the life of your tyres and increase the risk of tyre failure.

Harsh acceleration
The higher the revs per minute, (RPM), of an engine the more fuel is used. Always try to keep the revs low and change into the highest gear possible as soon as possible.

Defensive driving
Anticipation. Read the road ahead and adapt your driving for things you can see developing. For example, if you can see roadworks ahead with traffic lights at red, slow down gradually using the momentum you have built up and try to avoid harsh braking. The same method can be used when approaching junctions or roundabouts. Try to time your approach so that you arrive to coincide with any gap in the traffic you would have to stop for, and if safe to do so try to keep moving as you approach, arrive and drive through the junction. This technique must be balanced however, with the need to maintain normal progress and consideration of other road users, (for example those behind you who may become impatient if you are travelling too slowly).

Maintaining a safe distance
Always leave a safe gap between you and the vehicle in front. This will allow you plenty of time to react and reduce the need for harsh braking. If a vehicle overtakes and moves into this gap gradually ease off the accelerator until the gap has increased again.

Avoid drag and short journeys
Leaving roof racks roof bars and luggage boxes attached can increase drag which will decrease fuel efficiency. Also, a vehicle is at its most fuel efficient when the engine is warm.

Finally remember. Every time you brake, you are wasting the fuel you used to reach the speed you are travelling at in the first place.
