Informing you on Melksham environment and climate issues [about]

Background - Our planet and so forth

We live on our planet, in an environment which has been here since time immemorial.  Much of that environment is cyclic - it has been sustainable, with resources going around and around - we breathe air, converting oxygen to carbon dioxide, which plants then convert back to oxygen and release back for us animals to breathe again.  Or water evaporates from the sea, forms clouds that blow over land and then falls as rain, running down streams and rivers and back to the sea. But those are simplistic descriptions - there are many other cycles and the interact with one another.

But as a race, we have grown, and in that growth and in our development we are knocking those cycles off balance - using very slow regenerating resources (such as coal and oil) far too quickly, and doing things in the short term that cause long term damage - damage that might never be recoverable. That's damage to our planet, our climate, our life style, our economy, our own health and our very survival.

We are said to be at the 59th minute of the 11th hour of opportunity to stop damaging spirals of permanent destruction and restore sustainable cycles - for ourselves, our children and our grandchildren.  It is now the commonly accepted view that we have a problem, though there remain some who don't accept that ("climate change deniers"), and others who don't really wish to look beyond their own lifetime. There's also the questions "what can little me in Melksham do to help?" and "will I make any difference?"

And how does that look from a Melksham [ Gotham / Lark Rise / Emmerdale ] perspective?

Let's be pragmatic - the whole world needs to act to sort out the problems all around the world.  We cannot do it all on our own. However we can do some and it can be of local and personal benefit ...
* There are local issues involved
* It can improve our individual health and life style
* We can be influencers
* It can help our pockets
* We can feel good about it

How do we measure "the difference"?  How much "difference" does taking the bus make?  And how does that difference compare to the difference made by taking a shower rather than a bath?  Will it make a difference if I work from home, and is that a positive or negative difference, and is that the same in the summer as in the winter?

Getting answers

This is an information and ideas portal for the people of Melksham.  And the idea of the portal is that it will provide you with a growing gateway of articles, ranging from short tips and techniques through to learned papers, all signposted for our town.

The portal will have an environmental and climate bias - but then there are environmental issues in just about everything we do, so it will be pretty wide ranging.  Early days, but we rather hope you'll find enough of interest to come back here regularly, and to share our pages widely.  We're looking for organic growth, and at the provision of facilities to let you interact

Who's doing this

The seed we are growing from has been sown by the Environment and Climate Working Group of Melksham Town Council - the project initially being spearheaded by expert volunteers and encouraged by councillors, and with keen but limited help (to keep an eye on our staff resources and costs) from Council staff.  At this very, very early stage (written 16th March 2022, initial text by Graham Ellis) using open source software and spare web space.  Also at this very, very early stage there are massive open questions on data and article selection and scope, posting and editorial policy, propagation, life cycle of project, data and site management, and resources (time and cost) associated with the answers we will develop.

Precis: Environment and climate, the worldwide issue, and how it relates to Melksham and our residents. How this site will work as an information source and exchange, and who's providing it
